Bondage Safety Guide

When practicing bondage, always be mindful of the fundamental safety considerations and the types of things that can go wrong.

❗️Before you get started...

Always make sure you play safe and never participate in bondage with somebody that you do not trust. This usually goes without saying, but it's worth mentioning again.

Bondage Safety

Here’s my personal bondage safety tips, which I have learned by practicing bondage for over 20 years.

Whether playing with ropes, cuffs, chains, leather straps or some other restraints, you should first know the pro’s, con’s and potential risks and issues associated with each type. Here’s some quick examples — cuffs are good as they can be double-locked and so won’t tighten, but without the key they will be locked in place!

General restraint safety list

  • Do not make restraints too tight as it can severely restrict blood flow in a dangerous way
  • Always double lock cuffs so that they do not tighten during play
  • Become familiar with how to remove certain restraints quickly
  • In the case of cuffs/locks, always have multiple sets of keys to hand in case you need to unlock in an emergency
  • In the case of padlocks, keep in mind that some countries don’t necessarily have high standards for these types of products and so European one’s for example can be made to a different standard than say one’s bought from Asia
  • Ropes can be hard to remove quickly in an emergency, so consider having scissors to hand
  • Leather cuffs can be comfortable to wear for longer periods and you will notice that paying more money for good quality cuffs is worth it to ensure comfort
  • If practicing bondage with a partner, never leave them unattended at any time
  • Some bondage positions put a lot of stress on the body especially after long periods of time. Even a position which starts out fairly tame can develop to be quite intense after several minutes. Always be aware of the limitations of the positions and your partner’s ability.
  • Do not practice bondage while under the influence of drugs or alcohol!

Handcuff safety

  • Buying cheap handcuffs is never a good option, particularly for safety for both the wearer and the applier. For example, avoid the cheap cuffs with a clover-like key
  • Always buy good quality handcuffs which can be double-locked as they will be safer, especially for long sessions
  • Be aware that cuffs can cut into the skin over time, especially if you are going to be pulling at your restraints or with limbs under tension. They can appear loose at first but start to dig in
  • It’s not recommended to wear handcuffs on the legs, but if you insist on doing so, make sure to not tighten them too much as they can restrict blood flow and feel tighter when you stand up. In general, handcuffs are designed for men’s wrists and can fit women’s ankles, which tend to be more slender, although as I say, it is not recommended.
